Section 15 of the Intelligence Services Act refers to "Rules to protect the privacy of Australian persons". I made an initial query to DSD, ASIS, and the Commonwealth Attorney-General's Department in December 2001 asking for a copy of the rules, and received a single response from a @defence.gov.au email address in January 2002 indicating that the rules were "classified". Not wanting to accept this answer, I forwarded the prior correspondance to the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security (IGIS) and the Privacy Commissioner. I received a prompt response from the IGIS indicating that he would investigate the matter. I received a follow-up response approximately a week later, indicating that DSD and ASIS would be asked to place the Section 15 rules on their websites in the relevent areas, and that a copy of the rules would be provided to me by mail in the meantime. This on-paper copy has been transcribed and is supplied here in full. Any typographical errors are my own. - Grant Bayley, Jan 2002 Thanks to: - The Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security - Rendrag, for transcribing the DSD Rules.
