I don't own this drive (yet -- it's on it's way though).  I asked Chinon Tech 
support about this report.  They said that PC Mag tested the 535 with 
unamplified speakers.  Chinon says that their manual states that amplified 
speakers are highly recommended if not required.  I hope they are right, for 
my sake!
