It's just poor programming. It does it on everyone's system, believe me.
Those rare times that it doesn't "break" are when you're probably
backtracking onscreen and the CD's buffer can reload the graphics with
reading from disc.

Around here we called it The Ditherman Project (for its crappy dithered
graphics, you see... sorry, small joke).
