I don't know it is the good answer, but I have heard
that Unixes like devices with 512 bytes/sector and CD-ROM
usually have 2048 bytes/sectors.

So, the SUN-CD might have been modified for such purpose and when
you try to use it on DOS (which might expect 2048bytes/sector),
MSCDEX gets lost :-(

May a idea but I'm not a guru, sorry.
