It would be pretty bad if that would be normal, happily though this
  can be fixed relatively easy.

I'm sure you have a soundcard of some sort (or did your sound effects
were coming out of PC speaker?) On most soundboards there's an internal
CD Audio connector (on PAS16 and SB Pro it's a 4-pin male plug close
and parallel to the outer edge of the card. In that case you need to
connect it to the CD Audio out on a CD-ROM drive - as far as I know
they have it somewhere next to controller cable plug on the back for
the internal drives. Some tweaking with the cables may be required,
check with your CD-ROM and Soundcard manuals to make sure the pins
match or contact manufacturer. In case there's no internal CD Audio
connector on a soundcard, you can always connect cable for the
earphones on a drive to line-in on a soundcard. It should
work just fine. In case you are using a PC speaker for all the effects,
my advice is to go and get a soundcard - for less than $100.00 you
can get much more out of those games. Especially that for many
of them the _only_ difference between CD-ROM and diskette versions is
digitized speech (King Quest V, Indiana Jones/Atlantis, DOTT, etc.)
  Good luck,
