P> Apparently, NEC is manufacturing this drive for OEMs like MediaVision, and

P> Yes, it's the fault of the chop shops that they are getting out in the market,

P> Their product marketing manager is going to get an earful from me next week.

It is very likely that the drive you purchased was sold by Media Vision
to a large wholesaler who then sold them to other dealers. They were not
sold by NEC to a distributor. No doubt when the drives were sold to Media
Vision they would have agreed to take the support calls, which is part of
the reason they got an excellent price on the hardware. Now your dealer
can't or won't support you, Media Vision doesn't want to, and so you turn
your attention to NEC who probably didn't really do anything to deserve
 your wrath.

On the other hand, Toshiba has been in similar situations before and
 they have always been helpful.

Bottom line: get a better dealer.
