I haven't taken any of the advise offered below, therefore, I DON'T MAKE ANY WARRANTIES AS TO ITS ACCURACY OR EFFECTIVENESS. FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING ADVISE AT YOUR OWN RISK. I note that playing around with your autoexec.bat and config.sys files is probably something you don't want to be doing if you are in any way unsure of yourself! You can really mess up your system's configuration. In any case, make a backup of each of these files before changing them. <> Broderbund Software Direct P.O. Please note that if you have received a similar guide in the past, new information has been added. We appreciate your time and patience in this matter. <> Dear Myst MPC Customer, Thank you for your interest in Broderbund Software and for taking the time to write. We received you fax regarding your difficulties with the MYST MPC program. Below, you will find helpful troubleshooting techniques as well as the latest known issues and possible solutions to assist you in having the program up and running soon! Myst Trouble shooting Part I: * Make sure that you are using the most current drivers available for your video card, sound card, CD-ROM driver and Microsoft/DOS utility. MSCDEX.EXE (current version is 2.23 included with DOS 6.2). THIS IS ESSENTIAL IN RUNNING THIS PROGRAM EFFECTIVELY. Please note that drivers are often updated every few months. AT THIS TIME, THERE IS A 95% SUCCESS RATE ON RUNNING THE PROGRAM SUCCESSFULLY AFTER ENSURING ALL DRIVERS HAVE BEEN UPDATED. Please check you autoexec.bat file to make sure that C:\DOS is in the line that begins PATH so that MSCDEX.EXE is loaded from the DOS subdirectory. * Make sure that you do not have any other Windows applications running in Windows. Open up your tasks list by pressing the Ctrl and Esc keys and close everything except for Program Manager before running MYST. * Rem out the load = and run = line in the WIN.INI file. VARIOUS KNOWN ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS HEADLAND/VIDEO 7 CARDS: There is a known problem at this time between the Video7/Headland Video Card (manufactured by AHEAD!) and Apple's Quicktime for Window's engine. Due to the design and video sophistication of the program, MYST MPC requires Quicktime in order to run effectively. MYST is set up so that it could accept a patch for Quicktime if or when it becomes available. Symptoms of this problem are as follows: * Unable to see the full animation of the Quicktime movies * Split video * Animation half way off screen The following has helped a few find success with these issues: The Program Manager, select RUN from the FILE menu. Type QTW.INI in the COMMAND LINE and click on Ok. Look for a section titled [VIDEO]. If such a section does not exist, please add it (*instructions below). The first line under [VIDEO] should read OPTIMIZE = DRIVER. Currently, it may read OPTIMIZE = HARDWARE. Please change this to OPTIMIZE = DRIVER. If the OPTIMIZE line does appear as the first line in the [VIDEO] section, you should add it as well. If you do not see a [VIDEO] section, one can be created by pressing the ENTER key to add a blank line and typing [VIDEO] in that blank line. However, it MUST be the FIRST line of the QTW.INI file. <> From the FILE menu select SAVE and then select EXIT. You must restart Windows at this point. Select EXIT Windows from the Program Manager FILE menu. At the DOS prompt type WIN and press the ENTER key to restart Windows. This seems to work for quite a few people, however, it may slow down your system. A few others have found success in selecting the Video 7 video driver for resolution 640x648x256. If the above information does not work for you, we must unfortunately suggest that you return the software to the dealer from where it was purchased until Apple and/or Headland/Video 7 provide an update. SOUND BLASTER 16 DRIVERS ON MYST DISK If you own the Creative Labs Soundblaster 16 (SB16) sound card when you play Myst you will notice the sound is clipped. The SoundBlaster 16 Windows sound drivers on your system must be updated for Myst to work properly. With the cooperation of Creative Labs we have included updated drivers for the SB16 on the MYST CD. If you are not sure if you have a SB16 sound card at the DOS prompt type "DIR C:\*. /W" and press the enter key. If you have a SB16 sound card you will see "[SB16]" in the list of files on your screen. If you do not see "[SB16]" in the list of files we recommend checking with the store you purchased your hardware from. Unfortunately, two SB16 driver files are missing from the Myst CD. The missing files are available from Broderbund. For your convenience you can order the files from Broderbund's BroderLink Bulletin Board System, or order them on floppy disk by phone from Broderbund Customer Service. The "Myst MPC updated drivers for SB16" are only available on 3.5 floppy disk format. You will be sent one disk and installation instructions. >>> Continued to next message * SLMR 2.1a *
