I learned this the hard way:

If you're installing a sound card with your CD-ROM and the sound card has a 
joystick port, ENABLE the sucker and DISABLE the port on your IO card, if you 
have one.

Having my system set up the OTHER way nearly drove me to tears.  IRQ problems 
and software incompatibility problems and much, much grief.

After I enabled the game port on my SoundBlaster card and disabled the one on 
my quite expensive IO card...all my troubles vanished like the wind.

Something to think about.
