: Assalamualaikum,
: First of all, you could try the benchmark programs available in
: ftp.cdrom.com somewhere in the jungle that is the directory structure
: of such ftp sites (can somebody point the exact dir please? I can't
: be bloody bothered to remember).
: Alternatively, you can take my word for it that you CDROM is NOT
: double speed if :
: i) at boot up, the driver does not identify it as FX001D (the
: only double speed CDROM that Mitsumi has)
: ii) the CDROM opens up with a snap and gapes at you (i.e. it's
: like the jaws of an animal)
: iii) I'm not too sure 'bout this, but Mitsumi only started to
: manufacture dbl-speed CDROM drives early this year, so if it's
: manufactured before 1994, it's not dbl-speed.

You are only off on a couple of minor points.

1. The Fx001D started selling about Aug./Sept. of 93.

2. Some boxes that contain an FX001 or FX001D are marked CRMC along with
FX001 or FX001D. Keep in mind that if it is marked FX001, it is not
double speed. When I bought my FX001D - mail order - it actually
came in a CRMC LU005 box. I almost sent it back without opening it.
I verified that it was double speed both with the driver and with
   a benchmark program (cdspeed).

If the drive was manufactured in Feb. 93, as you indicated earlier
   it is not double speed.

: And another thing, if I'm not mistaken, if it's labelled CRMC,
: then it's the Mitsumi LU005S, a single-speed, multisession, rather
: good access time CDROM drive (but then, the box which contained the
: FX001D also had CRMC written on it somewhere...can somebody clear
: this up?).

: Cheers.
