I was having the same problem and strangely enough, it was related to the 
video card.  According to a Q&A on Virgin's BBS, this problem can be 
solved by downloading their universal VESA driver (uvesa41.exe) and 
loading it prior to starting the game.  I'm using a Diamond Speedstar Pro 
VLB (Cirrus Logic chips with built-in VESA).  Loading the VESA driver 
completely eliminated the clicking sound I was hearing.
