I'm still wondering if I can hook up the sound card to the CD-ROM or proprietary
card internally --- Without using the external audio to the sound card's aux in
connector on the outside of the computer...

I ask this because I'm also comparing this mitsumi drive to an ORCHID drive (forget
the model #). But this drive claims to support all the mentioned criteria, including
CD-I (although I have not been successfull in finding software to test the claim).
This ORCHID drive is 300k/sec with 350/ms average seek. While the Mitsume claims
350k/sec at 250/ms average seek.

Thanks for all the other answers. I have to decide how bad I want CD-I? If at all.

CD-XA - yes (so-called 'multimedia' format)
CD-I - no (CD-Interactive)
CD-DA - yes (CD-Digital-Analog -'music' cd format)

I'm not aware of many of the popular players that support CD-I.

Sure, there's an audio out connector with a cable. You might have to use a
different connector on the sound card end, depending on your board. It's easily
modified by looking at the pinouts.

Actually, I believe that this drive is MPC-1 compatible and only missed
the MPC-2 standard because it has a 32k cache rather than the spec'd 64k.
However, it meets all of the other MPC-2 spec's including speed, etc.

There are two things at work here: single speed vs double speed, and
two different 'formats' (this isn't the right term, but I'm not sure what
is). The 'single speed' is ~150k/s while dbl ~300k/s. The two different
formats allow something like 570Meg max vs 650Meg max. I don't know the
significance of this, but basically, one of these 'formats' (I think the
650M) will be read faster than the other, resulting in a performance
boost.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

ciao,
