After you check the DMA's and IRQs as the previous message indicates -- Try
the differenct soundblaster setting when install your games.  7th guest 
gives different options for music and speech.  There were 4 different sound blaster
selections (pro, I, II, 16?) Any way the proaudio did not work for me either but
the sbpro works great for music and speech.   I haven't been able to NOT get it
to work yet - but your right - the proadio software selection does not work many times.
