Here's me thinking that CDs are much more robust than other forms of media (like floppy disks)... I've had an audio player for years and have never had any problems with the hundreds of CDs I own. I recently got a Creative Labs multimedia upgrade kit, which came with a Creative Labs (Matsushita) 563 drive. For awhile it worked fine -- but recently I've had a number of problems. For one thing, I bought the Encarta 1994 upgrade. At the beginning, it sometimes would have problems reading the disk. Now, it constantly gives me "Drive reading error" messages. A couple of other CD-Roms I've bought have given me similar "can't read this" type errors. Looking at the disks in question, I notice a number of marks which might be scratches. As I'm extremely careful when I handle these babies, I'm at a loss to explain their presence. I know the 563 drive has a front-loading tray rather than a disc-caddy. Maybe the discs aren't protected as much as they should be. They just rest on a plastic tray -- presumably spinning around on it at high speeds when the thing is closed. I guess what I want to know is... is this a common occurence among CD-rom drive owners? Have other people with 563-drives (or similar front-loading tray models) experienced problems with their discs? Or did I simply get ahold of some bad discs? It's most frustrating! nyrB --
