  My thanks to everyone who offered solutions on where to find
the latest version on MSCDEX.EXE.

  My problem turned out to be that I was using an old version
that came with the CD-ROM drive, and when I upgraded to the
new version of DOS (6.21), a new MSCDEX was included in the
DOS directory. When I installed that version, everything
worked just fine.
