CD-Recordables Workshop

Instructor:

Dr. Ash Pahwa, is President of CD-ROM Strategies, Inc., and
author of the "CD-Recordable Bible" (Pemberton Press, 1994).
Dr. Pahwa is an internationally recognized speaker and has
conducted many workshops an d seminars in the CD-ROM and
database areas.

Overview

This introductory workshop will bring you up to speed on the
authoring, premastering and mastering of of CD Recordable discs.
You will learn how CD-R can have a major impact on your
information distribution and data archival activities. You will
gain hands on experience with authoring packages and discuss
compatibility issues between CD recordable media and the
various recorders on the market. You can expect to learn the
answers to the following questions in the 2-day workshop:

* What is a CD-Recordable ?

* What are the differnces between the various authoring software
packages?

* What are the differences in Premastering software packages and
how do they relate to different applications?

*  What are the differences between CD-Audio, CD-ROM, CD-ROM/XA,
and CD-I?

* What is a mixed mode disc?

* What products do vendors offer that interoperate?

* What are the implications of ISO 9660 in CD-R.?

* What is a multisession CDR, and what are its applications?

* What are the best methods for producing a CD-R ?

The Fundamentals of Producing a CD-ROM

Overview

The Fundamentals of Producing a CD-ROM is a hands-on seminar
that walks you through the steps involved in creating a CD-ROM.
You will learn why CD-ROM is such a reliable and powerful
publishing and archiving medium. You will come to understand
behind the scenes issues such as the ISO 9660 standard and its
impact on your CD-ROM design. The pros and cons of software
retrieval engines will be presented for both textual and fielded
data. Throughout the class, students will execute the
procedures involved in creating a CD-ROM, and on the last day
will leave the class with their own newly recorded CD-ROM.

Day 1

Day one begins with an overview of CD-ROM technology. The
instructor will give a brief history of information management
and discuss the philoshophy of CD-ROM vs. retrieval software.
Next, CD-ROM architecture is explained so that the student may
gain a better understanding of the differences between a
mainstream CD-ROM and a multimedia CD-ROM. You will conclude
the day with a theoretical walk through of the steps and
decisions involved in the creation of a CD-ROM.

Day 2

The second day will focus on the access software that makes
CD-ROM such a powerful information delivery platform. The
various data structures (text, fielded, imagery, etc.) will be
examined relative to the capabilities and limitations of the
various authoring tools on the marketplace. Hands-on experience
will be emphasized during this part of the seminar through the
use of the state-of-the-art PC (including of course CD-ROM
capability) for every two students. Each student will build
several databases using commercially available authoring
software.

Day 3

On the third day, students will apply the knowledge they have
acquired by actually creating their own CD-Recordable disc. The
gamut of commercial CD-ROM premastering software packages will
be examined, including a detailed explanantion of the pros and
cons of each. Then, using the databases and the indexes that
were created on the previous day, each student will go through
the entire premastering process and complete creation of a
fully functional CD-ROM recordable disc. A variety of case
histories will be examined in order to equip you to ask the
right questions when beginning your own CD-ROM project.

Digital Video Workshop - Capture and Compression

Instructor:

Jan Ozer, President of Doceo Publishing specializes in
multimedia publishing with video.

Mr. Ozer is a frequent contributor to PC Magazine, CD-ROM
Professional and other industry magazines.

Overview

This two-day intermediate-level workshop is especially designed
to meet the needs of training manangers, CBT and interactive
video authors, multimedia designers and programmers. You'll
learn how to film, capture and compress images for maximum
playback quality, how and where to use codecs like Indeo and
Cinepak, and when to consider hardware playback alternatives
like MPEG or DVI. You'll also learn which equipment to buy to
accomplish these varied tasks. After this course, you will know
how to produce high quality digital video effectively and
efficiently.

Day 1

Day one begins with an introduction to digital video and
describes in detail why it is so difficult to deal with. After
discussing video capture and video bandwidth, you will move into
a detailed explanation of video compression focusing on such
issues as: video playback, interframe compression, and
intraframe compression. After lunch, you will be introduced to
the tools and architecture involved when working with Video for
Windows. You will learn how to synchronize sound through the
use of techniques such as VFW controls and frame dropping.
Next, compression and playback parameters will be examined in
detail so you will be able to choose the best parameters for
your application. The first day will conclude with an
explanation of how to optimize compressed video quality when
using Video for Windows compression controls.

Day 2

The second day will begin with a "CODEC" tour that will evaluate
and explain the pros and cons of using Video 1, Indeo, Cinepak,
or scalable MPEG for your application. Next you will learn how
different hardware platforms can enhance or hinder video
performance. After a short break, you will take on the complex
topic of capture alternatives and what the relative tradeoffs
are when using video input alternatives, including the
differences between real Time vs. Step Frame. After lunch, a
discussion of film quality will lead into the presentation of
methods for improving the quality of your compressed video.
Next, a full consideration of when hardware alternatives such as
MPEG and DVI make sense will be undertaken. The day will
conclude with student questions.
