In the local computer store, I saw a CD called "Introduction to Classical Music". From the jacket it looked very good to excellent. Unfortunately, I didn't have the cash then and it's sold out now. I didn't note (no pun intended) the publisher. It had samplings of the instruments in the orchestra, four areas of music (opera, chamber music, ballet, and I forget) you could focus on to select pieces from, 200(?) biographies of composers. Street price was around $35.
