	I think the Moby Lexicon people actually did the
	Shakespeare files that PG distributes.  Perhaps this
	accounts for it?  You could ask over on the `gutn' newsgroup.

	One reason is to distinguish versions proof-read to
	different editions of the same work, which may contain
	interesting variations.  As an example, I've helped
	produce rholm10a.zip (not yet released), which is a
	version of the PG file rholm10.zip, proofed to the
	original Strand magazine publication.  There are many
	subtle differences between the English -- rholm10a.zip
	-- and American -- rholm10.zip -- editions which 
	fascinate Sherlock Holmes freaks like me.
