I purchase a CD-ROM from Computer City. The box it came in is labled NEX 3Xi Triple Speed CD-ROM. I thought that I was indeed buying a 3Xi. Well I decided to call NEC to ask some general questions about the unit, the "NEC" SCSI controller I bought and device drivers. After speaking to customer support and a tech rep I learned that I indeed have an OEM'd model, the CDR-510. What I was told next angered me. NEC does NOT provide any warrantee nor am I allowed any tech support for this product. NEC went on to tell me that Computer City is engaging in false advertising. NEC also mentioned that OEM'd CD-ROM's undergo modifications by the buying party before they are resold. These modifications are why NEC does not warrantee them. These mods may also modify the 3Xi specs, meaning you may not have the 256K cache, the 450Kb/sec transfer rate, the 195ms access time, THE TWO YEAR LIMITED WARRANTEE, etc. I purchased my "NEC 3Xi" about two months ago...thinking that I indeed purchased the genuine article. After I calm down a bit I will be going to Computer City to get my money back and purchase the REAL thing from someone else. _/_/_/_/_/ _/_/_/_/_/ _/_/ _/_/ | Shanker's Converse to O'Hare's Law: _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ | _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ | Inside every small problem is a _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ | larger problem trying to get out. _/_/_/_/ _/_/_/_/_/ _/ _/ |
