Thanks for all those that sent me hints.  I figured out what I was overlooking
in my previous explorations and was able to get to the end of the game.  By
the way, I took the advice of another poster and saved the game after getting
back from the fourth age.  I then played it out exploring all the possible
ways to do it.  It was fun to see the way things turn out when you don't do
the right things...

P.S.  I sure hope that Broderbund comes out with another MYST.  MYST is one
      fantastic game!!!
