After posting the note about the difficulties I was having with a PAS-16
sound card and an Apple CD300 CD-ROM drive (worked fine as a CD-ROM drive but
neither DOS nor Windows programs recognised it as having audio capability),
I finally managed to get an ftp session through to ftp.uwp.edu, where I found an
updated driver which fixed the problem. It seems that the CD300 uses the
SCSI-2 command set (I had a suspicion this might be so, but had no way of
checking).

I think this might be a good subject for inclusion in the FAQ: as more
and more drives adopt the SCSI-2 command set, more people are likely to
encounter the problem if they're running relatively old driver software.

   Thanks to all who replied.
