Well now I tried setting the speed of the drive (in the CONFIG.SYS file) to "Normal" as opposed to "Double" and that problem seems to be mostly cleared up -- the drive will now read the disks. The only problem is, I can't use it at double-speed. Does this narrow down the problem at all for me? Am I looking at bad disks that just need to be read at a slower rate (one of the disks that was giving me problems was Microsoft's Encarta. I just got a new copy today, fresh out of the box and it, too, had problems reading at the double-speed rate)? Or is it the drive that's having problems at higher speeds? I *could* take the drive in to be serviced (I *did* open it up, but there was no visible problems I could see), but that would cost money so I want to be fairly sure that there is a problem with the drive before I take it down to the repair shop. To that end, does anybody know of any good shareware CD Rom drive diagnostic programs out there? I have a small one that came with the drive, but it's not picknig anything up, so I'm looking for something that's really thorough. nyrB --
