I'd only recommend using this command line in your config.sys if
you happen to be using QEMM (Quarterdeck Extended Memory Manager).
There's probably a similar command for Dos 5 EMM386, but this 
probably isn't it at least in its present form.  Wish I could add
more, but my Panasonic CDrom drive installed and operated without
flaw, thus saving me the kind of anguish you're facing.  Somewhere
out there is someone who actually knows what you need just off 
the top of their head.  Hope you find him.
