I concur with the midi comment.  I have yet to succeed, but am thinking
that my Gateway 2000 sound card may be defective. (Can't get through to
their tech support to resolve this).

Anyway, you can test this all out using the Media Player in your 
Windows Accessories group.  Click on Device and choose the midi device.
You should then be able to select a midi sound clip, then play it with
Media Player.  Inability to get this far is an indication of problems
with drivers, midi mapper, etc.  Much easier than using Encarta for
the testing. (I have been suffering with all this for over a month).
