My roomate had a similar problem with his Sony drive.  This was the problem.
He has a Pro Audio Spectrum.  This card does the installation for the CDROM.
It cam with its own version of MSCDEX.exe which I suspect is for DOS 6.0.
He has DOS 6.2 and he recieved the error that you got.  Go into your dos
directory and copy the MSCDEX.EXE that is in there to the directory that
the installation program is trying to run it from.
