What doesn't work, Paul? It makes perfect sense. The digitized audio data 
on a Audio CD is handled just like the binary data for computer programs on 
CD-ROM disk. The only difference it might have is that there might be a 
slight pause in the music while a computer generated command was sent to 
the CD-ROM player. 

What confuses me is the in AND out jacks on the CD-ROM player. I can see 
the OUT, I can see a LEFT and a RIGHT phono jacks, but an IN?? 

What you might want to do, if you insist upon an external input to the
sound card is run the cable from the OUT jack on the CD-ROM player to the
IN jack of the Sound Card. The Sound Card will act as the output amp and
be played through the Sound Cards Speakers.
