This is not only a common practice but it is also common for the OEM
to make changes to the product so the original maker cannot support
the product. I bought an OEM STB video card once and discovered that
there were enough differences between the card and the retail STB
card that BIOS upgrades for the retail STB card would not work
with the OEM card.
