ch is an open source PHP developer involved in the SymfonyCMF and is the de
veloper of PHPBench.\nMaking performant systems is often a goal in web deve
lopment. Thereare many ways to monitor and verify performance\, from commer
cialservices such as Newrelic\, using profilers such as Blackfire or XDebug
\,or simply using Curl or Firebug. These methods\, however\, act upon thewh

DESCRIPTION:This month we have a talk from Ollie Lawson titled Tales from i

t has revolutionised the arena we work in. Although not the inventors of th

service is there a future for having your own “iron”?\nThe commoditisation
of enterprise class hardware and software has meant that small scale organi
sations can have large scale infrastructure. Listen to how you can use all
the tools at your disposal (yes\, even DevOps) to get that hosting bill dow

DESCRIPTION:This month we have Simon Holywell (@Treffynnon / simonholywell.
com) presenting his Functional PHP talk based on the book he is writing on
the same topic.\n\nIn the PHP world functions are generally sneered at due
to their simplicity and perceived as an evil side effect of spaghetti code.
This is not necessarily the case however as when functions are combined in
a logical manner they can be very powerful.\n \nIn fact they can be deploy
ed to great effect in all manner of applications to create advanced and pot
entially less error prone software. This talk will take the form of a gentl
e introduction to functional programming concepts in a PHP context.\n \nIt
will cater to a variety of levels of knowledge. Right from those who have n
ever heard of functional programming to coders who have been practicing asp
ects for years in other languages (JavaScript!) - perhaps without even know
ing.\n \nDuring my talk you’ll hear some history\, functional theory (intro
duced gently I promise) and of course some practical examples. You definite
ly do not need to be a mathematician or expert/functional coder to enjoy th
is session.\n\nIf you want to attend the talk at the library you'll need to
register for a ticket\, but if you want to just join us at The Libertine f
or the social you wont need one.   \nWe will be meeting at Westbourne libra

DESCRIPTION:This month we have the excellent Jenny Wong speaking for us at
PHP Dorset.  She'll giving a talk on "Integrating Communities":\n\nIs PHP o
ne community or many?  Frameworks and CMSes created in PHP are popular enou
gh to have self-sufficient communities\, but this can often result in a lac
k of crossover between the communities. The result of the fragmentation is
wasted effort and time as a developer but also a lack of knowledge transfer
that extends outsides our own subgroup bubble. \nThis talk will bring some
practical suggestions and solutions on how to look outside our comfort zon
es\, widen our technical circles\, and ensure that we learn from other peop
les mistakes and bridge the gap between communities. As a result\, we will
make all our communities more diverse and stronger.\n\n If you would like t
o come along please register for a ticket\, it's free - but we have limited

DESCRIPTION:Dave Hulbert - Practical intro to using PhpSpec. AKA how to be
lazy and write better code.PhpSpec is a tool for "SpecBDD". Basically test-
driven development (TDD) but without the word "test" in it. This talk shows
how to effectively use PhpSpec for fun and/or profit\, and the advantages
to using it along side other tools like PHPUnit and why it's "literally" ma
de of awesomesauce. We'll start off with a breakneck primer on unit testing
with PHPUnit and basic TDD concepts. Then we'll move on to getting set up w
ith PhpSpec\, followed by a guided tour of its main features. By the end of
the talk you'll have techniques to take advantage of your natural inclinat
ion to lazyness to actually help you write better code.

DESCRIPTION:David McKay - Kickass development environments with Docker\nDoc
ker\, the hottest technology around at the moment. It swept the Ops world b
y storm in 2014\, became mainstream in 2015\, and now it’s set to dominate
the developer world\, in 2016. Docker is a tool that allows you to package
your application up into a single-runnable distributable binary - akin to t
he phar\, but in Hulk mode. Docker allows you\, a developer\, to specify th
e exact environment your application needs to run\, across development\; te
st\; staging\; and production. In this talk I will cover the creation of th
is utopian distributable and show you how to can compose your entire produc
tion infrastructure locally with only a small YAML file and without install
ing a single thing. Lets say hello\, to Docker.\n

DESCRIPTION:Stanko Markovic - How to do interviews properly - view from bot
h sides\nAs software developers\, we are in great demand. There are lots of
companies out there looking for good developers\, but how do we know what
companies are good to work for? \nWe will look into how to set yourself up
for the interview as a candidate\, and what signs to look for. There is a c
lear list of indicators and questions we should ask\, that will give us a c
lear understanding of the way a company is organised. But what happens if a
developer has to be the one conducting the interview?\nHere we will switch
things around\, as we will go through the way the interviews should be con
ducted from the interviewer side. We will see what questions to ask\, and h
ow to gauge the answers from the candidate. We will look into how to struct
ure the interview\, and what techniques to use.\nFinally we will go over so
me of the interview basics and how to navigate the usual pitfalls of the jo
b marketplace. Overall by following these steps\, we should make the job hu
nt easier\, and more pleasurable for all involved.

DESCRIPTION:This month we have the awesome Michael Cullum speaking for us a
t PHP Dorset.  Michael will be giving his talk titled Getting off the Islan
d\n\nThere are many FOSS projects out there - such as phpBB\, Drupal\, Word
press\, MyBB and Joomla - that are web applications designed for end-users
and have\, due to a range of factors\, become very isolated from the rest o
f the open source community\, which can only be a bad thing. Many of these
projects are beginning to change their philosophies\, but there is a long w
ay to go. We’ll look at how frameworks\, libraries\, and the PHP FIG can he
lp these projects to 'get off the island' and how we can shift the focus fr
om creating communities to integrating them.\n\n If you would like to come
along please register for a ticket\, it's free - but we have limited space
at the venue. \nAfter the talk we'll be heading to the The Westbourne for p

s more than likely you are maintaining a codebase built on Wordpress. Many
of these projects have outgrown their humble beginnings as blogs or website

we use as PHP developers to aid our development\, particularly in teams\, c
an be tricky to utilise with the popular blogging platform.\n \nThis techni
